In the medieval times, Ringsted held considerable significance within the administration of the country, since it was the seat of the local assembly or the whole of Zealand. Since, it was the most important place on the Zealand peninsula, it served to be the center of all activities during major festivals and events taking place on the peninsula.
The highest seat of justice on the Zealand peninsula was also the local assembly that was located here. Christianity set foot in Ringsted with the establishment of the first church here in 1080 A.D. and was transformed into the burial site for Duke Knud Lavard. The place had access to a larger church which was later built by king Valdemar I in 1160 A.D. This bigger church later transformed into the center around which the city of Ringsted developed. The Benedictine Monastery also served as another important landmark of Ringsted. Ringsted was also the first place on the Zealand peninsula which was connected by the railways.
