The city of Helsingor lies in the strait of Oresund, which today occupies the area between Helsingor and Helsinborg. Some historical sources have traced Helsingor's history back to the pre-Christian era sometime in 70 B.C. But some how the city gained recognition only in the middle ages when King Valdemar ruled Denmark and it is then that sources state that the Helsingborg served as Helsingor's main fortress.
Prior to the medieval times, Helsingor might have remained blissfully unknown, remaining just a marketplace but it was during this period that Christianity set foot in Helsingor and the first church of the place, Sct Olai Church was built and this changed the image of the city. The church till today serves as the diocese of Helsingor.
Helsingor gained administrative status as King Eric of Pomerania came to the Danish throne and it was this king who was instrumental in building the castle named Krogen which later was increased in stature to be named the Kronborg castle in 1580. Sweden's Helsingborg and Denmark's Helsingor have been connected via ferry routes and very recently via a bridge across the Oresund.
