Villa Mercedes

Villa Mercedes is situated in the San Luis province in Argentina , at a distance of 32 kms from Cordoba. Villa Mercedes is situated on the bank of the river Quinto . The name Villa Mercedes was adopted by
the residents because they chose the “Virgin of Mercy” as their patron. Previously, the name of the place was Fuerte Constituciona l which changed to Villa Mercedes in the year 1856. In the year 1896, Villa Mercedes got the status of a city.

Villa Mercedes came up as a town with both civilian and military settlement. This town had a military base to safe guard the territory against the attacks from the Ranquel Aboriginal Tribes . As per the 2001census, Villa Mercedes has a population of 96,781 inhabitants.

Villa Mercedes experienced a rapid growth with the coming up of the railway station in the year 1875. The railway station was established at a distance of 4km north from the main town. The rail station was set as a part of the expansion of the Central Oeste Argentino Company , joining Cordoba to Rosario . The railway system was built to transport products from Cuyo to the central provinces of the country. Along with the products the railway system also brought along many immigrants who settled here.

Villa Mercedes is an important industrial and educational center in San Luis. National University of San Luis makes San Luis more famous.
