There are 14 main rivers in Cyprus. All the rivers originate in the Troodos mountain range. Lying in the southern region of Cyprus the Troodos mountains form the second largest mountain range in the island, the first being the Pentadaktylos mountain range. All of the 14 major rivers are fed by the rainfall that occurs in the winter season. During the summers, which are hot and dry, all the Cyprian rivers dry up. Thus none of the Cyprus rivers are perennial rivers as all of them are rain fed and the rain falls only in the winter months.
Several of the main rivers of Cyprus flow into various Bays. The largest river of Cyprus is Pedieos which flows from west to east and joins the Famagusta Bay. River Karyotis flows northwards and river Serakhis flows northwest wards. Both these rives flow up to the Morphou Bay. Another of the major Cyprus rivers, river Kouris, flows towards the southern region of Cyprus and finally ends up in the Episkopi Bay.
The Cyprus rivers play a significant role in the formation of the soils in the regions near the rivers. The rivers provide the soils with their fertile character and thus help in the cultivation of various crops.
