Marijampole city is located within the Marijampole county. It is the capital city of the county. Marijampole is the seventh largest city in the country and has been one of the crucial centers in the county for long.
The city covers an area of about 205.07 square kilometers. The city is bisected by the Sesupe River which flows through it. There are six bridges across the river and they connect the two parts of the city. The city of Marijampole in Lithuania is well connected with the other regions through a highly developed and integrated transportation system. The city of Marijampole is governed by the city council. The inhabitants elect the representatives to the council. They are chosen from the various political parties. The city is the base of several industrial firms. These firms deal in a variety of items from plump yarn to food industry manufacturing equipments. Furniture, other wooden items, cement, brick, meat processing units are also found in the region. Marijampole has also developed as a center for tourism. There are several stadiums in the region which constitute the recreational centers of the city. There are a number of museums in the region which draws a large crowd. The Taurus District Partisan Museum, the J. Bendorius Memorial Museum, the Ethnographical Museum, the V. Mykolaitis Putinas Memorial and the J. Jablonksis Historical and Literary Museum all display a rich collection of various antiquities.
