Klaipeda Map

The city of Klaipeda is located in the district of the same name. Klaipeda occupies the eastern extremes of Lithuania. It is located in the coastal region, at the site where the Curonian Strait meets the Baltic Sea.
The establishment of the town was laid as early as 1252 by the Livonian Order. The town had its share of ups and downs as it was plundered many a times by the different warring armies namely the Lithuanian army, the Sembai and the Zemaiciai armies. The Livonian Order retained the right to rule the town for a long period of time. The incorporation of Klaipeda into the Lithuanian territory came about in 1923. The city, however, witnessed a a change in power again as the reins of the city now passed on to the Germans during the Second World War. The incessant combats left the city in ruins and it had to be reconstructed. During the Soviet rule a program of industrialization of Klaipeda in Lithuania was undertaken. At present Klaipeda has evolved as a major ice-free port. The major commercial activities of the region include oil export, ship building, ship maintenance, fishing ports and an international ferry port. The town has a number of parks, beaches, museums which include a Maritime Museum and Aquarium along with a Dolphinarium.
