The Alytus city occupies a position of great importance within the ethnographic region of Dzukija. In the country, Alytus in Lithuania is considered to be the sixth largest city in the country.
The population of the city is estimated to be around 77,302. The chief river of the country Nemunas borders the city. The city is the hub of all major socio-economic, administrative and cultural activities within the Dzukija district. The economy of the city is bolstered by its developed industrial structure. The thriving industries in the region include chemicals, construction, breweries, dairy production units, meat processing units, woodwork and textiles. The city of Alytus in Lithuania is also fast emerging as a tourist hub. The lake districts of DidZiulis and Obelja get a large number of tourists each year. An interesting way of exploring the region is by undertaking a fight on a hot air balloon and soar high above in the sky enjoying a panoramic view of the surroundings. Other leisure activities in Alytus include fishing and canoing. The origins of this magnificent city can be traced back to as early as 1377. It was located at the point of merger of the Nemunas River and the Alytus Spring. The intensive industrial program undertaken in the region by the Soviet regime, gave it a new life and facilitated its growth.
