Wisconsin Flag

The flag of Wisconsin was adopted on May 1, 1981. However, it was first adopted in 1863 and then modified in 1979. The design of the flag includes a dark blue background and the state’s coat of arms at the center.

Wisconsin’s coat of arms is derived from the state seal of Wisconsin. In addition, the state’s name “Wisconsin” and the year of statehood “1848” are written above and below the coat of arms.

Wisconsin State Symbols

In 1836, Wisconsin declared a territory. The Great Seal of Wisconsin was first created in that year. In 1839, the first revision of the official seal was done.

The current design of the Great Seal of Wisconsin includes a coat of arms from 1851. In 1881, the seal’s design was modified. The official seal has four sections:

  1. Outer Section: It features:
  • The words “Great Seal of the State of Wisconsin” are around and above the central design.
  • 13 five-pointed blue-colored stars in a yellow banner below the central design.
  1. Top Section: It features:
  • Wisconsin’s state motto, “Forward,” is written on a white banner and is situated at the top of the coat of arms.
  • The state animal, the badger, is located just below the state motto.
  1. Central Section: It features:
  • You’ll see a central shield, which is quartered:
  1. A plow at the top left section of the shield is there. It represents farming and agriculture.
  2. A pick and shovel at the top right section of the shield are there. It represents mining.
  3. An arm and hammer are present at the bottom left section of the shield. It represents manufacturing.
  4. An anchor at the bottom right section of the shield is present. It represents navigation.
  5. At the center, the US coat of arms is located. It includes the Latin word “E Pluribus Unum” (which means “Out of Many, One”).
  • A sailor and a miner are seen supporting the shield. While the sailor holds a coil of rope, the miner has a pick.
  1. Bottom Section: It features:
  • Below the shield are a cornucopia (left-hand side) and a pyramid of lead ingots (right-hand side). They represent the prosperity, abundance, and mineral wealth of Wisconsin.

Wisconsin History

Archaeological evidence shows that the Wisconsin area was inhabited by the hunting nomad human beings 14,500-year ago. More than thousands of years after the trace of mammoth hunters, the early native American tribes arrived. The tribes were the Dakota Sioux, Sauk, Fox, Potawatomi, Ojibwe, Menominee, and Winnebago. Even today, in the Wisconsin area, 11 tribes of Native Americans live.

The first Europeans to arrive in this region were the French. In 1763, when the French and Indian War ended, the British claimed this area. The land came under American control around 20 years after the American Revolution ended. On September 3, 1783, the Treaty of Paris was signed, and on January 14, 1784, the US Congress of the Confederation ratified the treaty.

The boom in lead mining took place in the 1820s. This attracted many more settlers to this region of the United States. The Native Americans tried to defend their land from the settlers, which led to many conflicts. However, all the battles stopped by 1832. In 1836, Wisconsin became a territory. On May 29, 1848, Wisconsin attained statehood and was admitted to the Union as the thirtieth state of the US.

Just before the Civil War, Wisconsin (in association with other US states) developed the Underground Railroad. It helped the enslaved people to escape to freedom in Canada. The Progressive movement started in this state. It led to the rise of Robert M. La Follette (a reformer who became the Governor of Wisconsin and later a US Senator).

Until 1932, the US Presidential and state elections were won mainly by the Republicans. However, in 1934, the Wisconsin Progressive Party came into existence after breaking away from the Republican Party. In 1946, this new party again merged with the Republican Party. However, many Wisconsin Progressive Party members joined the Democratic Party. That’s when the Democratic started becoming influential in the state. It was around 1971 when the Democratic Party began to dominate the political landscape in the state.
