About the Universities in Maryland

The US State of Maryland has various historic and renowned private universities, the most notable being John Hopkins University. The state’s public universities belong to the University System, with an exception of United States Naval Academy, St. Mary’s College and Morgan State University. Over 310,689 students were enrolled at Maryland universities and colleges in 2005.

University of Maryland, Baltimore

The University of Maryland is a public university located in downtown Baltimore. It is a part of the University System of Maryland. It was founded in 1807 and has some of the oldest professional schools in the nation as well as the world. It covers an area of sixty acres and enrolls approximately 6,000 students annually. It is called University of Maryland to distinguish it from University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). The university comprises seven professional schools: School of Medicine, School of Law, Dental School, School of Pharmacy, School of Nursing, Graduate School, School of Social Work, and School of Public Health.

Johns Hopkins University

The Johns Hopkins University (JHU) or simply Hopkins, was founded on January 22, 1876. It is a private research institute based in Baltimore, Maryland. It has international campuses located in Italy, China, and Singapore. As of 2009, thirty-three Nobel Prize winners have been affiliated with the university. The university is a member of the Consortium on Financing Higher Education and is one of the founding members of the Association of American Universities. The university was ranked thirteenth among National Universities by US News and World Report. The university enrolls approximately 19,000 students annually.

Towson University

Towson University (TU) or simply Towson, is the second-largest university in the state, after University of Maryland, College Park. It is a public university located in Towson, Baltimore and is a part of University System of Maryland. Towson was founded in 1866 as a training school for teachers. Today, it has four-year degree granting institutions comprising eight colleges, with an annual enrollment of over 20,000 students.

Washington College

Washington College is a private liberal arts college. It is located on a 112-acre campus in Chestertown, Maryland. The founding of the college was supported by George Washington. The college was granted the charter of Maryland in 1782. It is the 10th-oldest college in the country and the first college chartered after American independence. In 1891, the college became coeducational. The school enrolls approximately 1400 students annually.
