The University of Virginia is a public research university. It was founded by Thomas Jefferson in 1819. It is the only university in United States to be designated as UNESCO World Heritage Site. University of Virginia ranked the second-best public university in 2011 edition of U.S. News and World Report. The university enrolls approximately 20,000 students annually. It is notable for having ranked programs, including its law school, undergraduate business school, graduate business school, nursing school, and medical school. The university does not offer any honorary degree.
James Madison University
James Madison University, also known as JMU, is a public co-educational research institute. It is located in Harrisonburg, Virginia and was founded in 1908 as a women's college. The university offers 108 degree programs for the bachelor's, master's, educational specialist and doctoral levels. On October 2, 2009, it was granted a chapter by the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa academic honor society. The university is nationally recognized for its academics.
Averett University
Averett University is a private university located in Danville, Virginia. It was established in 1859 as a Baptist college, but no longer has a religious affiliation. It offers associate and bachelor's degree programs in approximately 30 majors along with two master's degree programs. The main campus of the university is spread across 19 acres of land located on West Main Street in Danville. The university enrolls 2,719 students annually and the student-to-faculty ratio is 14:1.
Emory and Henry College
Emory and Henry College is located in Emory, Virginia. It is a private liberal arts college and comprises 331 acres of Washington County, Virginia. It is the oldest institute of higher learning in Southwest Virginia and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is also listed as one of the 40 "Colleges That Change Lives". It was established in 1836. The college offers more than 50 Bachelor degrees and has more than 25 academic programs. The college enrolls approximately 1,000 students annually.
