There are six state university systems and four independent public universities in the state of Texas. A state university system refers to a single legal entity and administration consisting of several institutions, each with its own identity as a university. Four of the university systems are the University of Houston, the University of North Texas, Texas State, and Texas Tech.

Texas has three nationally recognized top-tier public research universities:
  • The University of Texas at Austin
  • Texas A&M University
  • University of Houston

Texas A&M University


Located in College Station, Texas, Texas A&M University is a public research university. It is the seventh-largest university in the United States with over 49,000 students enrolled in ten academic colleges and eighteen research institutes. Texas A&M has approximately 800 officially recognized student organizations. The university offers a number of degree courses. It offers a full-time program of Volunteer Corps of Cadets that provides more commissioned officers to the United States Armed Forces than any other school.

The University of Texas at Austin


Founded in 1883, the University of Texas at Austin is a public research university located in Austin, Texas. It is the flagship institution of the University of Texas System with the fifth-largest single-campus enrollment in the nation as of 2010; there are over 50,000 undergraduate and graduate students and 16,500 faculty and staff.

The university has seven museums and seventeen libraries, including the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum and the Blanton Museum of Art. Various auxiliary research facilities, such as the J. J. Pickle Research Campus and the McDonald Observatory are also operated in the University of Texas.

Midwestern State University, Stephen F. Austin State University, Texas Southern University and Texas Woman's University are the independent public universities in Texas.

Texas has many private institutions ranging from liberal arts colleges to a nationally recognized top-tier research university. Rice University in Houston is one of the leading research universities in the United States, and is ranked the nation's seventeenth-best overall university by U.S. News & World Report.

There are two presidential libraries in the Universities of Texas:
  • George Bush Presidential Library at Texas A&M University
  • Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum at The University of Texas at Austin
There is a plan to create a third library: the George W. Bush Presidential Library at Southern Methodist University.

Texas University at San Antonio


The courses offered in the UTSA include 62 undergraduate , 43 post graduate programes and 19 doctoral programs. Planning for eight additional doctoral programs and seven post graduate programs are still under consideration. Needless to say, UTSA is soon to be branded as one of the best doctoral and research intensive institutions. The two most important centers apart from the other regular educational centers are the the Center for Distance Learning and the Learning and Teaching Center. When the former is meant for the students, who have an urge for higher education but cannot afford to do so, the latter is meant to make efficient teachers out of students.

Texas Woman's University


It is the urge and the will to involve women in the educational policy of Texas, that the Texas government has taken a commendable step in creating the Texas Woman's University. With the ideals of No Child left Behind Act in Texas, the Texas Woman's University offers an array of courses that have proved to be helpful in all the spheres of life. Whether it is home or some professional field, women are trained to be a vigilant and outward.
