Illinois Universities

The University of Illinois has the biggest public university library in the world. The US state of Illinois has eleven national and many public and private universities.



Illinois has eleven "national universities" classified under The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.
Five of these national universities rank in the "first tier", among the top five hundred national universities in the United States of America.

These universities are: the University of Chicago (8), Northwestern University (12), the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (39), Illinois Institute of Technology (106), and Loyola University, Chicago (119).

There are more than 20 additional accredited universities, both public and private. The state also has 49 public community colleges in the Illinois Community College System. Other notable universities in the state are:

University of Chicago

The University of Chicago is a private research university in Chicago. It was established in 1890 and was founded by the American Baptist Education Society. William Rainey Harper was elected the first president of the university in 1891, and the first classes were held in 1892. It is affiliated with scores of Rhodes Scholars and 85 Nobel Prize laureates.

The university enrolls around 15,000 students overall and approximately 5,000 students in the college. The main campus of the university is spread over 211 acres, and it grants degrees in 49 academic majors and 22 minors. The university has six professional schools: the Pritzker School of Medicine, the Booth School of Business, the Law School, the Divinity School, the Harris School of Public Policy Studies and the School of Social Service Administration.

Trinity International University

Trinity International University is headquartered in Deerfield, Illinois. It is an evangelical Christian institution and comprises an undergraduate college, a theological seminary, a graduate school, and a law school. It is operated by the Evangelical Free Church of America. It was established in 1897 and enrolls approximately 3,000 students every year. The university is a member of Council for Christian Colleges and Universities, the Christian College Consortium, the Illinois State Scholarship.

Illinois State University

The Illinois State University is the oldest public university in the state. It was founded in 1857 and is located in the town of Normal. Charles E. Hovey was elected the first president of the university in 1857. Illinois State University is considered a "national university", with an endowment funds of $60.6 million. The campus is spread across 350 acres of land and has an annual enrollment of 20,857 students.
