Regions of Germany is often an arbitrary classification. Depending upon one's needs and objectives, one resorts to categorization of regions having, say, similar characteristics in culture, language dialect, distribution of agricultural farms and produce, etc. A few decades ago, between 1949 and 1990 to be precise, 'regions of Germany' would have meant East Germany and West Germany, wherein the former was an occupied territory of Soviet Union and the latter the mainland located adjacent to it.
For a traveler, the following regions of Germany would appear attractive and worth exploring:
Bavaria:
The largest state of Germany, located at the southeastern part of the country. Bavaria, inhabited by 12.5 million people, is famous for its bucolic lifestyle of people, breathtaking scenes of mountain ranges, medieval castles, and for beer and breweries.
Black Forest:
Also known as Schwarzwald, Black Forest is synonym for wood and mountain. This taciturn region has a huge wealth of knowledge in handicrafts: perhaps few of us know that traditional cuckoo-clock has its origin in this region. Located in Baden-Wurttemberg state of southwestern Germany, Black Forest is surrounded by Rhine Valley and by the cities, Freiburg and Baden-Baden.
East of Germany:
Bogged down by a history of underdevelopment and communist dominance, this region of Germany often falls back to the architectural marvels of its buildings and to its cultural grandeur to cheer up its days. Saxony serves as the mediating point of intellectual activities in all parts of the country. States Bradenburg and Thuringia are known for lakes, sceneries of mountain cliffs and Gothic architecture.
In addition to the above, the other regions of Germany with remarkable natural beauty and cultural heritage include, Rhine Valley, Ruhrpott (Ruhr Valley) as well as areas surrounding North and Baltic Sea.
