The police Jury governs sixty-four parishes in the state of Louisiana. The Police Jury is a legislative council elected by voters. The remaining 26 parishes have various other forms of government, including council-manager, council president, consolidated parish/city and parish commission.

History of Parishes in Louisiana

The Parishes in Louisiana were first formed during part of the Orleans Territory. In 1807 after creating the Civil Parish System, 19 Louisiana parishes were established on April 14, 1807. In 1808 Catahoula Parish joined the Louisiana parishes. In 1910 four additional parishes were created from the former Spanish West Florida Territory. The US State of Louisiana entered the Union as the 18th state with 25 parishes on April 30, 1812. In 1845, when the Louisiana state constitution was rewritten, the remainder of the county system was eliminated, and the official term for Louisiana’s primary civil division has been parishes since then.


Oldest and Newest of Louisiana

The 12 oldest counties and parishes of Louisiana were created on April 10, 1805. The counties were Lafourche parish, Orleans County, German Coast county, Acadia parish, Attakapas, Pointe Coupee, Opelousas County, Rapides Parish, Concordia Parish, Ouachita Parish and Natchitoches parish. On June 12, 1912, the newer and the last parishes were created, including Jefferson Davis, Allen and Beauregard.

Largest and Smallest Parish by Area in Louisiana

Plaquemines Parish is the largest parish in Louisiana, covering an area of 2429 square miles (6,290 km2). The smallest parish of Louisiana is West Baton Rouge Parish covering an area of 203 square miles (530 km2).

Best Parish to live in Louisiana

The five best parishes to live in the Louisiana state of the United States are Ascension Parish, Lafayette Parish, St.Charles Parish, St. Tammany Parish and Calcasieu Parish.


Most Populated and Least Populated Parish of Louisiana

East Baton Rouge Parish is the most populated parish (2020 census) in Louisiana, and  Tensas Parish is the least populated parish (2020 census) in Louisiana state of the United States.
