This is for the first time that the European Championship final tournament would be contested by 24 teams, each one been expanded from the 16-team format that was used since 1996. As per this format, all the finalists of the tournament would contest a group stage that includes six groups of four teams, followed by a knockout stage that includes three rounds and the final.
