Zvartnots Map

Zvartnots is an Armenian town located in the province of Armavir. The town is situated nearly 10km away from Yerevan, the capital of Armenia. Zvartnots is famous for the architectural masterpiece, the Zvartnots Cathedral located at the center of the town . Zvartnots is a perfect example of Armenian architectural excellence.

Zvartnots is basically a complex of structures established in the middle of the 7th century. It was located near Echmiadzin. St. George temple or Zvartnots and the palace of Katholikos Nerses III or Builder, as it is commonly known, are the two main constructions of the complex.

The Zvartnots, known as the main cathedral of Armenia was built in 641 - 661. The traditional Armenian architectural composition was followed while building this temple. The interior of the cathedral is decorated in frescos. It is shaped like a typical Greek cross with three isles. The exterior is a polygon with 32 sides. According to Toros Toramanian, a member of the first excavation party, the cathedral was three storied. The extraordinary artistic splendors of Zvartnots amuse the onlookers even today.

A picture of the cathedral was placed on the first issue of the 100 AMD banknotes. An exact replica of the Zvartnots Cathedral is positioned in the history museum in Yerevan. In 2000 Zvartnots was inscribed in the list of UNESCO World Heritage.
