Ani Map



Ani is a medieval city-site located on the border of the Turkish province of Kars and Armenia. The city was once the capital of Armenian kingdom that covered most of Armenia and eastern part of Turkey during the medieval period. Ani is located on a site shaped like a triangle bounded and protected by the valley of Akhurian River on the east and the Bostanlar valley on the west.

Ani is called the "City of 1001 Churches" in Armenia. It was situated on various trade routes. The many religious buildings, forts and palaces of this city were some of the most technically and artistically advanced architectures of the world.

All monuments of Ani are built using local volcanic basalt that is available in a range of vibrant colors. Some of the most visited locations are listed below:
  • The Cathedral of Ani
It is a church of the Holy Mother of God which was constructed under King Smbat II in 989. It is a cathedral shaped like a dome.
  • The church of St Gregory of Tigran Honents in Ani
Completed in 1215 the church of St Gregory of Tigran Honents is the best preserved monument in Ani.
  • The Minuchir Mosque of Ani
Minuchir was the first ruler of the Shaddadid dynasty who ruled Ani from 1072. The still intact tower of the mosque is the oldest part of the entire structure.

Ani had been invaded quit a few number of times and massive amount of destruction took place due to these invasions, resulting in the city being completely abandoned and existing as cluster of ruins at present.
