Extensive geographical variations characterize the regions in Niger. The visible differences found in all the regions in Niger are based not only on the surrounding landscape, climatic conditions and natural vegetations but to some extent on the agricultural activities and habitat of the land as well. In fact, the divisions of the Niger mainland into three geographical regions originate from the visible topographical variations in Niger.
Niger regions on the basis of diverse topographical features, is categorized into three geographical regions, namely the Nigerian Sudan Region to the north, the Guinea Coastal Areas in the south and the Central Region. It is on these varied Niger geographical regions that foreign intruders in ancient times settled permanently for a couple of time.
Among other types of regions in Niger, mention must be made of the Niger Delta located to the east of Benin City. This region is known to be the one of the largest mangrove swamps in the world. As of date, however, agricultural activities are still not possible on the Niger delta region owing to the marshy nature of the soil and the land.
The Niger River valley is yet another important geographical region in Niger. This wide valley overflows with waters from seasonal and periodical floods, leaving behind thick layers of rich, alluvial soils. It is due to this extensive silt deposition that Niger valley forms an important agricultural region in Africa.
