Kansas has the fifth-highest total counties of any state. Kansas was a part of the Missouri Territory between 1812 to 1821. On May 30, 1854, Kansas Territory was created. On August 25, 1855, 36 counties of Kansas were created. On January 29, 1861, Kansas entered the Union as the 34th state. Greeley County, City of Tribune, Wyandotte County, and Kansas operate as unified governments. Twenty-eight former counties of Kansas have existed but are defunct due to reorganizations, mergers, splits, and name changes.

Oldest and Newest Counties of Kansas

On August 25, 1855, the oldest and 36 original counties of Kansas were created. The counties were Arapahoe, Allen, Atchison, Anderson, Bourbon, Browne, Butler, Breckinridge, Coffey, Calhoun, Davis, Doniphan, Dorn, Douglas, Franklin, Greenwood, Hunter, Jefferson, Johnson, Lykins, Leavenworth, Madison, Marion, McGree, Marshall, Nemaha, Riley, Richardson, Shawnee, Weller, Washington, Wilson, Wise and Woodson. The Newest and last County of Kansas state created on June 9, 1888, is Grant County.
