Taiwan has been ruled by different governments at different times; therefore, its flag has changed several times in the past. Currently Taiwan uses the flag of the Republic of China, which is described below.

Adopted in1945
ColorsWhite, Blue and Red
Nickname“Blue Sky, White Sun, and a Wholly Red Earth”

Flag Description
The flag of Taiwan is a 2:3 rectangle with a red background. On the top-left corner is a blue rectangle—also known as the canton-on which is depicted the sun in white color, having twelve rays. Connecting the base of these twelve triangular rays is a blue ring.

Meaning of Colors
The three colors in the flag of Taiwan are representative of the Three Principles of the People given by Sun Yat-sen, the first president of the Republic of China. These are as follows:

Blue: Nationapsm and Liberty

White: Democracy and Equapty

Red: People’s Livephood and Fraternity

Considering the official ratio of 2:3, the proportions of various parts of the flag of Taiwan are as follows:
  • Width of flag: 2 units
  • Length of flag: 3 units
  • Width of canton (blue box): 1 unit
  • Length of canton: 1.5 units
  • Diameter of sun: 0.75 units
  • Angle between two rays = 30 degrees

The canton (blue box with white sun) in the flag of Taiwan comes from the “Blue Sky with a White Sun Flag”, which was designed by a martyr of the Republic revolution, Lu Hao-tung. The red background, depicting the “red earth” was added by Sun Yat-sen, the founding father of the Republic of China, who was also the first president. The new flag was adopted in 1928. For Taiwan, however, the flag came into use in 1945.

The white sun inside the canton has twelve rays. This represents the twelve months of the year, and also the traditional twelve divisions of the day into two-hour intervals known as shichen. The red color stands for “red earth”, signifying the blood of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the Republic. The use of blue and white colors in the canton is historical, as explained in the section above.

The following points govern the protocol regarding the use of the flag of Taiwan:
  • When used in government buildings, the flag must be displayed horizontally, with a portrait of Sun Yat-sen placed touching the bottom part, aligned with the middle of the flag length.
  • Whenever the flag is being lowered or hoisted, those in attendance must present a salute with their right hand held flat at the level of the right eyebrow.
  • The hoisting or lowering of the flag must be accompanied by the National Banner Song.
