The city of Trencin, a former Roman military colony was born in the 3rd C. In 1412 it became an independent royal city. The fortified castle is the highest point of Trencin Slovakia and it provides a comprehensive view of the city. The castle was built in the 11th C and it later came under Matus Cak, a well known historical figure of Slovakia. Under his rule the Tower was constructed which still bears his name. Today it is one of the symbols of Trencin. The castles have become the venue for exhibitions, medieval music and shows, classical concerts and folklores.
The lovely Catholic Parish Church of the Virgin Mary is located on the hills that lead to the castle. The Peace Square lies in the middle of the Old Town. The Trencin Museum and a 19th C synagogue are significant sightseeing spots in the town of Trencin. Near the synagogue is an historic monastery which has been transformed into the Gallery of M.A.Bazonvky who is a modern painter.
Trencin in Slovakia is ideal for nature lovers and hikers. The woods of Povarsky Inovec are worth walking through. The traditional village of Selec lies at the bottom of the Inovec Mountain.
