About city : 
Charlotte Amalie is the capital of the island of Saint Thomas which is a part of the Virgin Islands, USA located in the Atlantic Ocean. It is often referred to as downtown. It is a deep harbor and a common port of call for a number of cruise ships. Founded in 1666 when it was called Taphus. It was renamed in 1691 in honor of Queen Charlotte Amalie to Amalienborg. The region around the city was settled by taino, arawak, kalinago and ciboney people before the Europeans arrived.In 1671, the Dutch acquired the island and constructed the Fort Christian. In 1917, USA purchased the Virgin Islands and they made the city the headquarters of the Virgin Islands in 1931.

Today, it is a thriving tourist destination with an approximate population of 18,500.

Geography : 
The city is located in the middle area of the mountainous island - Saint Thomas. It has been built on three volcanic spurs which are the Frenchman hill, Berg hill and the Government hill.

The city enjoys a tropical wet and dry climate. It is warm and humid. The city has a distinct dry season from January to March. The rest of the year gets rainfall, most of which is concentrated from September to November.

How to reach (transport) : 
To reach Charlotte Amalie by air you will have to land at the Cyril E. King Airport and then you can travel to the city by taxi. Regular flights are available to Puerto Rico, San Juan and several American cities.

However, the most popular way to reach the city is by boat as it is a deep harbor where a number of cruise ships arrive. Regular ferry connection exists with Tortola in the British Virgin Islands and with Fajardo.

When to visit : 
The best time to visit Charlotte Amalie is from January to March when the weather is dry and comparatively cooler.

Culture (fairs and festivals) and traditions : 
The culture of the city is highly mixed with elements of Afro Caribbean culture and American influence.

Some of the major festivals celebrated in the city are as follows :
  • Miracle on the Main Street is a major event celebrated during Christmas. Local goods, products and crafts are sold and street performances, live music and a number of other entertainments are offered. A lighted boat parade is the highlight of the event.

  • Emancipation Day is celebrated on 3rdJuly to commemorate emancipation from slavery.

  • The 6th Carlos Aguilar Match Race is organized by the St. Thomas Yacht Club and is likely to take place somewhere between November and December. As of now, the racing days have been scheduled from 22nd November to 24th November.The race takes place along the seawall of Charlotte Amalie. It includes several events which offer some great sailing while a lavish after race party is held with music, drinks and dancing.

Points of interest (places to visit) : 
Charlotte Amalie is known for its picturesque beauty as well as a number of interesting things to see. Some of these are as follows :
  • The two-storied legislature building is one of the older landmarks of the city. It was originally a wooden building erected in 1828 as a police barrack. The ceremonial transfer of ownership from Danish to American hands occurred in the courtyard of this building. It has been functioning as the legislature since 1956.

  • Fort Christian is the oldest standing structure in the island. It was build between 1672 and 1680 and its strong walls with thickness ranging from 3 to 6 feet have helped it to survive for so long. It was used as an administrative center, the Governor Residence, official place of worship and a prison at various times. Since 1971, it contains a museum where antique furniture, old photos and artifacts are displayed.

  • The Three Queens Fountain was unveiled in 2005. It contains statues of three queens, Mary, Agnes and Josiah who led an insurrection against the Danes in 1878 demanding higher wages and better working conditions.

  • Some of the other points of interests include Blackbeard’s castle, The Emancipation Park, Villa Norman, Brittania House, Step Streets and The Saint Thomas historical trust mini museum.
