Both Amtrak and the Virginia Railway Express (VRE) offer passenger rail services in the state of Virginia. Norfolk Southern and CSX Transportation are the major freight railroad companies in the state. Manassas Line and Fredericksburg Line are the two major passenger lines of Virginia.

The northern part of Virginia is served by the Washington Metro rapid transit system as far west as residential districts beside Interstate 66 in Fairfax County. Growth plans require Metro to arrive at Tyson’s Corner, projected as the biggest office market in VA by 2013 and Loudoun County by 2016 through the proposed Silver Line.

Passenger rail services in Virginia

The state of VA gets commuter rail services by Virginia Railway Express (VRE) and Amtrak. The Department of Rail and Public Transportation has researches ongoing for stretching high-speed commuter rail service into the South Hampton Roads and Virginia Peninsula regions. Plans have also been made for a railroad link to both the Southeast High Speed Rail Corridor and the Northeast Corridor. The proposed Transdominion Express would offer services to a huge portion of the south central areas of the state.

VA is the northern terminal for the Auto Train Service of Amtrak, which enables commuters to get a car on a whole night tour to the southern terminal in Sanford, Florida, which is quite close to Orlando, Florida.

Cargo railroads

Virginia is served by important Class I cargo carriers CSX Transportation and Norfolk Southern. There are many small length railroads, which include the Buckingham Branch Railroad, the biggest in VA.
