The Sanibel Island is a part of the State of Florida and is a barrier island. The origin of the name of this crescent-shaped island is not known; however, it may have been derived from the words ‘Santa’ and ‘Yebel’, which in turn might have been derived from the word ‘Point Yebel’. The Sanibal Island is a perfect destination whether you are looking forward towards vacationing with your family or for a romantic getaway with you partner. It offers you just the right blend of solitude and company. The Sanibel Island is coral in origin. Its unique crescent shape comes handy as a major shell trap resulting in the huge activity and industry of shelling for which the island is most famous. The island is also richly abundant in flora and fauna.

As a result of this abundance, around 60% of the Sanibel Island is conserved as a wildlife refuge. The avian and marine life on the island too thrives. When you dream of the beaches of Sanibel Island, what you should picture in your mind is a 17 mile stretch of white beaches filled with soft sand and creamy shells. The Sanibel Island is connected to the Captiva Island by a bridge.

Getting to the Sanibel Island is not a complicated issue at all, with efficient and frequent services plying to and from the island. The air and water routes are the most used ones. The island has plenty to show its visitors apart from the beaches. You could do some island hopping and check out on the J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge & Bird Sanctuary, Point Ybel Lighthouse, Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation Center (SCCF), Clinic for Rehabilitation of Wildlife (C.R.O.W.), Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum, Sanibel Seashell Industries and Chapel by the Sea (in Captiva Island). Eating joints are aplenty too. So you can take a pick from the various varieties that suite your style, budget and tastes. Some of the renowned ones are: The Bubble Room, Riviera, Chadwicks, Keylime Bistro, Thistle Lodge, Hungry Heron, Dolce Vita, Schnapper’s Hots Inc, Rosie’s Island Market & Deli, LaVigna Restaurant, Ellington’s Jazz Bar & Restaurant and RedFish BluFish.
