Lahaina is Maui’s second most-visited destination after its beaches. The historic town of Lahaina is sandwiched between the serene waters of the Au’au Channel overlooking the Lana’i island and the fertile valleys of Mauna Kahalawai. Lahaina has also served as a residence of the Maui kings and chiefs. It maintains the same aura of the mid-19th-century Hawaiian seaport. Lahaina was a famous whaling hamlet in the mid-1800s. Presently, the town houses several art galleries, unique restaurants and shops. With its historic importance, Lahaina is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Places to Visit
The Baldwin Home Museum: Called as the house of Rev, it is the oldest home in Lahaina. Baldwin not only served Lahaina as a minister but also as a government physician, dentist and veterinary.
Hale Pa‘i Printing Museum: A place where the first Hawaiian Newspaper was printed.
Lahaina Heritage Museum: This fascinating museum exhibits Lahaina’s heritage from the time when Hawaii wasn’t explored to the period of the Monarchy.
Old Lahaina Prison: Also called Hale Pa’ahao, which means ‘stuck-in-irons’ house, the old prison of Lahaina was built in the 1850s. The prison was used to confine the drunk sailors who went out of control. The confinement used to be of shorter duration.
Some of the other must-visit buildings in the town are Wo Hing Museum, Master’s Reading Room, Lahaina Lighthouse, Old Lahaina Courthouse, and Seamen’s Hospital.

Best time to visit Lahaina
Owing to its pleasant weather, Lahaina can be visited any time of the year. For the whale watching enthusiasts, the best time to visit Maui is from December through May.
The summer season spanning over April through November is warmer and drier. The winters (from December to March) are somewhat cooler.
