Namibia Prime Minister







Namibia is a presidential representative democratic republic, whereby the President of Namibia is both head of state and head of government. Nevertheless, the Prime Minister is no less a powerful figure in the politics of the country.

The Cabinet of Namibia is made up of the President, the Namibia Prime Minister and other ministers. Appointed by the President, the Prime Minister of Namibia performs a number of functions and duties. Along with the rest of the Cabinet members, the Namibia Prime Minister is responsible for the efficient administration and execution of the governmental functions.

It is the duty of the Prime Minister to organize the activities and functions of the Cabinet. He also advises and assists the President in executing the various governmental functions.

The Prime Minister in Namibia is assisted by the Deputy Prime Minister who is also appointed by the President of the country.

Hage Geingob was the first prime minister of Namibia; he assumed office the day Namibia achieved independence, ie, on March 21st, 1990. He was succeeded by Theo-Ben Gurirab who ruled from 27 August 2002 to 19 March 2005.

The present Prime Minister of Namibia is Nahas Angula; he has been the prime minister since 21 March 2005. All the three prime ministers belonged to the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO).
