The Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics would kick start on August 5, 2016. The Brazilian city of Rio da Janeiro is one of the first South American cities to host the Summer Olympics.
The 17-day mega event, which would culminate on August 21, would witness participation of 10,500 athletes from 206 National Olympic Committees. Kosovo and South Sudan will take part in the mega event for the first time. In case you don't know, 28 Olympic sports would be featured at the Olympic Summer Games, including golf and rugby sevens. Also, 306 medals would be awarded in the 17-day tournament.
The sporting events will be held at 33 venues in Rio de Janeiro – the host city. Apart from these, the events will also take place at five other cities – Brasilia, Salvador, São Paulo, Belo Horizonte, and Manaus.
For the opening ceremony, the tickets range from $662 - $3,045. The average ticket price of the games is 70 reals ($17) or less. Reports suggest that seats for 90 to 95 per cent of the venues are full. For ticket updates and alerts, one has to register on the official website of Rio Olympics 2016. Those who are not residents of Brazil, have to buy tickets through authorized resellers. The citizens of the United States and Canada can purchase their tickets through CoSport.
On May 3, 2016, the torch relay will start its journey in the Greek city of Olympia and the flame is expected to arrive in Brazil between 90 and 100 days before the start of the Games. The Brazilian phase will begin in Brasília and culminate in Rio de Janeiro city.
On November 24, 2014, the official mascots of the 2016 Summer Olympics and Paralympics were unveiled. The Olympic mascot is called Vinicius, which has been named after Vinicius de Moraes,a prominent musician. The Paralympic mascot is called Tom. It has been named after Tom Jobim.
