In 1861 when West Virginia was a part of the Commonwealth of Virginia, 50 counties of the state already existed during the American Civil War. In 1863 when West Virginia became a separate state, five additional counties were added. The counties were Grant, Mineral, Lincoln, Summers and Mingo. The FIPS code (Federal Information Processing Standard)  of West Virginia State is 54, which, when combined with any three-digit county code, would be written as 54XXX. The Country government powers in west Virginia state is divided between seven county offices:
