The present King of Nepal is Gyanendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev. The current Nepal King ascended the throne on the 4th of June in 2001. His ascendancy to the throne followed royal succession laws.
The present King of Nepal is the second son of King Mahendra. The Nepali king is an educated monarch. He completed his primary education in India. King Gyanendra studied at St. Joseph's College in Darjeeling. The monarch completed his graduate studies from Tribhuvan University in Kathmandu. King Gyanendra is married to Komal Rajya Laxmi Devi Shah. They have two children- Crown Prince Paras Bir Bikram Shah Dev and Princess Prerana Rajya Laxmi Devi.
King Gyanendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev came to the throne after the infamous Nepalese royal massacre. King Gyanendra soon proved himself to be an autocratic ruler. He tried to exercise control over the Nepal government in his early years on the Nepali throne. He had a penchant for dismissing democratically elected Nepali people representatives if their views do not match his own. The dismissal of the Sher Bahadur Deuba's government led to mass protests in the country. This forced King Gyanendra to abdicate his throne in 2006. At present, King Gyanendra is a ceremonial monarch. He has no power in any branch of the Nepali administration.
