Greek Folk Music

Greek folk music was one of the most ancient forms of music in Greece. Greek folk music has been largely influenced by the eastern musical trends and European musical culture. Folk music of Greece varies from one region to the other within the country of Greece. Greek folk music comprises of two different kinds of musical trends namely the klephtic and akritic. From 9th century onwards Greek life markedly changed due to the onset of the culture of folk music.

IMPORTANT INSTRUMENTS PLAYED IN GREEK FOLK MUSIC The musical instruments played in Greek folk music are the lyre, bagpipe, shawm, tambourine, drum , violin and lute. These instruments enhanced the sound of the folk music and gave it a rhythmical touch. These instruments were highly used by the Greek folk musicians during weddings, Greek festivals and other occasions.

FEATURES OF GREEK FOLK MUSIC The ancient dwellers of Greece who lived on hilltops and mountains initiated the culture of folk songs and dance. In their songs the influence of the ottomans can be clearly traced. These folk songs used to be sung usually during eventful days such as on weddings, religious festivals, on the death of some Greek folks men. There were folk songs for every kind of occasion. The folk songs were usually sung by the bards or minstrels and they used to tell the tale of famous warriors through their musical strain.
