A glimpse of Eritrea land and people reflects the diverse cultures, religions and languages of the Eritrean society. The various landforms comprising of coastal plains and cool central highlands cover a considerable portion of the total area of the country.
History of Eritrea Land and People
Originally Eritrea was a part of the Ethiopian kingdom of Aksum. Later it came under the rule of the Ottoman Empire and then again under the Egyptians. In 1941, the British captured Eritrea and it became united under the government of Ethiopia on 15th Sept 1952. On 3rd May 1993, Ethiopia declared Eritrea as a sovereign country.
Land of Eritrea
Eritrea spreads over an area of 125,000 square kilometers. In Eritrea, water is scarce and the land is prone to prevalent soil erosion. Although Eritrea is located on a hilly region with surrounding mountains, the valley on the central plateau is rich in fertility and is suitable for agricultural purposes.
Eritrean Society
In the Eritrean society, family and community are primarily male dominated. Most of the families prefer boys than girls and women are therefore less entertained in the fields of education and employment. The Eritrean people comprise of several cultural groups known as Tigrinya, Saho, Kunama, Tigre and Afar. Each of the ethnical groups in Eritrea has their own languages that distinguish them from others.
