Brazil Music varies area-wise, depending upon the diverse population inhabiting therein. Though
music of Brazil underwent varied foreign influences, the greatest influence came from within the mainland areas, which is dwelled by multi-ethnic population.
Native Folk Music:
Brazil Music in the indigenous stage was accompanied by instruments like rattles, horns, whistles, drums and flutes. The local and regional music at this stage reproduced sound of the Amazonian Rainforests. It was the Portuguese invaders who popularized the use of reed flutes, drums and wind instruments. Gregorian chant accompanied with clavichord, bow and flute were introduced by the Jesuit missionaries.

Brazil Music was enriched by the contributions of Jean de Léry, who published “Histoire d'un voyage faict en la terre du Brésil, autrement dite Amérique” or ‘Journey to the Land of Brazil’ around 1578. The publication of Gabriel Soares de Sousa, “Tratado Descritivo do Brasil” in 1587 contains a detailed description about the music of diverse Brazilian racial groups, including the Tupinambás and Tamoios.

Brazil Music during 18th -19th centuries was immensely influenced by the European music styles, especially the Viennese approach.
