As the Amazonas State capital, Manaus Brazilis a city located in north-western part of the country, at the confluence of Amazon and Negro Rivers. As the principal port and hub of extensive waterway communications, the city houses a total estimated population of 2,000,000.

Initially, Manaus Brazilwas a small port by the name of Sao Jose da Barra, founded by the Portugese settlers in 1669 to defend themselves from Spanish penetrations. In fact, the region derived its name from the native "Manaos" (meaning 'Mother of God') tribes who once inhabited the land. In 1948, it received urban status with the name "Cidade da Barra do Rio Negro", altered to "Cidade de Manaus" later in 1856.
