The lakes in Macedonia are popular tourist destinations and have become an important part of the Macedonian geography as well as culture. There are three tectonic lakes in Macedonia namely Lake Dojran, Lake Prespa and Lake Ohrid. Apart from these lakes, Macedonia boasts of about 53 artificial and natural lakes.
Lake Ohrid is the biggest and most beautiful tectonic lake of Macedonia. The lake lies about 695 meters above sea level. The fresh, clean and clear water of the lake has been attracting tourists from all over the world each year. This lake is fed by waters from Lake Prespa since it is at a much higher height than Lake Ohrid.
Lake Prespa is one of the deepest and oldest lakes in the world and is full of living fossils and other natural species. Lake Dojran is the smallest of the three tectonic lakes of Macedonia. This lake has the richest source of fishes and due to its lesser depth the water of this lake is considerably warm.
Apart from these tectonic lakes, Macedonia also has glacier lakes like Bogovinsko and Karanikolicko on Sar, Livadicko Lake, Big and Small Lake on Pelister. Apart from these natural lakes, there are many artificial lakes in Macedonia like Mavrovo Lake, Kalimanci on River Bregalnica, Gradce, Suvodol, Lipkovo, Tikves Lake on River Crna Reka, Mladost and Debar Lake.
Macedonian lakes are used for industrial power generation, fisheries, power generation, for sports and recreation activities and as popular tourist attractions.
