Benin Land and People


The official name of Benin is Republic of Benin. Benin-land and people is a mirror to vibrant African culture. The country was the epicenter of the slave trade in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Benin-land and people is a mix of different tribes living together. Benin country was known as Dahomey in the early part of the 16th century. Dahomey was formed politically to combat the growing menace of the slave trade. The original region of Dahomey was populated by different African tribes. The list of tribes include the Icha tribe, Ketu tribe, Anago tribe and the Dassa tribe. Human sacrifice was practiced in Benin until the early 19th century. The concept of vodun or voodoo reputedly originated in Benin.

Contemporary Benin is an underdeveloped country. The economy of the west African country is dependent on agriculture. The cultivation and further processing of cash crops like cotton provide gainful employment to ordinary Benin citizens. The government of Benin is trying to promote tourism to attract leisure visitors to the country. Labor intensive industries like food processing are being encouraged by the government to strengthen the Benin economy. The language of imparting education in schools is French. Primary health care standard is poor in the country.
