Benin Science and Technology has most of its research work directed toward the sphere of agriculture, which has full support from France.


Benin Science and Technology has most of its research work directed toward the sphere of agriculture. Benin Science and Technology is supported by the country of France. The most important institution related to the Benin Science and Technology is the Africa Rice Center. The Africa Rice Center is basically an autonomous research center that is an intergovernmental association of the member states of the African continent. The African Rice center is under the supervision of the Consultative Group on International; Agricultural Research.

The African Rice Center was established in the year 1970 by the eleven African countries belonging to the western regions of the continent. Previously, that is until 2003, this research center of Benin Science and Technology was known as the West Africa Rice Development Association or the WARDA.

The other three major offices which are involved with the Benin Science and Technology research work include the following:

  • The Benin Office of Mines under the guidance of the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Tourism
  • The National University of Benin
  • The Institute of Applied Research which was founded in the year 1942

The first two centers of Benin Science and Technology are located in the city of Cotonou while the third one is placed in the city of Porto Novo. The National University of Benin has an efficient faculty in the areas related to Science and Technology in Benin.
