Nauru President is both the head of the state as well as the Government. He holds the executive authority of the state. Moreover he symbolizes the unity of the state. He is elected by the parliament.
He is being appointed by three years. He holds the office until another person is elected as the next President. The state of emergency can only be declared by him. The President has got absolute power. His role is not only ceremonial. He appoints five and six members of the Parliament to form the Cabinet.
The Cabinet takes charge of different departments of the Government. The police, the public service and all government enterprises as well as the media are controlled by the Cabinet. However the President in Nauru, along with the Cabinet members, is collectively responsible to the Parliament for their work.
Some of the important Nauru Presidents are Hammer DeRoburt, Bernard Dowiyogo, Lagumot Harris, Kennan Adeang, Kenos Aroi, Rueben Kun, Kinza Clodumar, Rene Harris, and Derog Gioura. Some of them have become president more than once. Presently the President of Nauru is Ludwig Scotty.
