Cyprus politics reveal that the country has got a presidential system of Government. Other western countries have similar structure of government. President of Cyprus is the head of the state as well as the head of the government. The president is elected by the universal suffrage. He or she needs to serve a five year term. He needs to perform all the necessary duties until another person gets elected as president.
The post of the president in Cyprus was created after the country gained independence from United Kingdom.The President of Cyprus appoints the council of ministers. To be the president of this country one has to be the citizen of Cyprus. His role is not only ceremonial. He holds certain executive powers.
Cyprus has a multi party system. So the president can belong to any party. Some of the presidents of Cyprus were Glafkos Klerides, George Vasiliou, Archbishop Makarios, Nikos Sampson, Spyros Kyprianou. The present president is Tassos Papadopoulos. He was elected in 2003. He played an active role in PEKA. In 1959 he joined the London Conference. He represents the Greek Cypriot at the Constitutional Commission.
Before becoming the President of Cyprus he served the country as the Minister of interior, agriculture, finance, labor and social insurance, health, natural resources. He was also the advisor of Glafkos Klerides in the intercommunal talks. Being the president of Cyprus he represents the country in many international events, conferences etc.
