Tropical Storm
Hurricane Isaac strikes southeastern Louisiana, with strong winds of 80 mph. Classified as a Category 1 hurricane, the National Hurricane Center warned of a dangerous storm course occurring along the northern Gulf Coast. The storm is expected to plunge over a foot of rain, up to 20 inches in some areas from Biloxi, Mississippi to New Orleans.
Hurricane Isaac is an enormous slow-moving storm. It reached the coastline just around the 7th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, which devastated New Orleans back in 2005. Similar to Katrina’s path, Hurricane Isaac has created a high level of anxiety. The major activity of the storm is occurring at night which is a major concern as at night it becomes difficult to respond. People have been advised to avoid streets which are likely to be flooded. Most of the locals paid attention to the warnings and have either left town or boarded-up in strong buildings. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has been working with officials in areas which could be affected. Shelters have been set up in Louisiana and more than a million packaged meals, bottles of water and 17000 tarpaulin sheets have been stockpiled in advance.
