The Namibia President serves as the Head of the State and the Government of the Republic of Namibia. Article 27 of the constitution of the country lays down the powers and functions of the President of Namibia along with the procedure of the election of the president, the term of his office, his duties towards the country, the remuneration received by the President and his succession.
Besides being the head of State, the Namibia President is also the Commander-in-Chief of the Namibian Defense Force. It is the President in Namibia who along with the Cabinet holds the executive powers. The leader of Namibia is elected through universal suffrage for a term of five years. Every person of Namibia who is a citizen of the country by birth or lineage and who is of 35 years of age or more is eligible to stand for Presidential elections.
The Namibian President has a number of executive functions and duties. His principal duty is to recognize the constitution of Namibia as the supreme law of the land and abide by the rules and provisions laid down by it. The President attends and addresses the Parliamentary sessions and is answerable for all his actions to the Parliament. The Namibia President formulates the budget and governmental policies after having consulted the Cabinet.
The President has the authority to dissolve by Proclamation the National Assembly under circumstances mentioned in Article 57. He decides on the time to hold special sessions of national Assembly. Appointment of ambassadors, consular officers, the Prime Minister, the Attorney general and other ministers of the Cabinet are done by the President. It is the President who signs international agreements, announces martial law, creates and dismisses government ministries and departments, signs proclamations and performs various other functions. Thus the Namibian President with such a wide array of functions and powers is the head of the Namibian Republic. The current President of Namibia is President Hifikepunye Pohamba.
