Beppu city is actually situated on nine huge geothermal hot springs . These hot spots are the source of Beppu 's innumerable onsens or hot springs . These geothermal spots are known in Beppu as the 'nine hells of Beppu '. The hot springs in Beppu are divided in eight main areas. These areas are, Kitahama, Kamegawa, Shibaseki, Kannawa, Myoban, Horita and Hamawaki. These eight hot spring areas in Beppu together are known as the Beppu Hatto. Apart from these hot springs which are the most attractive travel destinations, Beppu's picturesque natural surroundings are also a great draw since it is located in between ocean and mountains.
Very recently in Beppu, an international university was inaugurated, named, Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University that offers international business management courses. As a result the city is now buzzing with the arrival of innumerable students coming from different foreign countries. This has also resulted in the opening of several multi cuisine hotels and restaurants in Beppu .
