Greenland Song

Greenland Song is a mixture of both the Inuit and Danish musical strand. It is influenced by the music of UK and US. ULO is the biggest music record label, which releases music of Greenlandic rock bands like Sume, pop singers like Rasmus Lyberth, hip hop music crews like Nuuk Posse and Inuit folk music as well.

However the traditional Drum dance is most famous and it is the only one that does not include any foreign influence. Greenland Song is sung in both Greenlandic and Danish language, each maintaining their distinct style of folk music.

Drums were used by the Shamans as part of their religious affair and at times they used to arrange singing duels between rivals. Drum Song is mainly performed for the sake of tourists and entertainment all over the country. The drum songs are only performed on especial occasions as the people of Greenland are very protective about them.

However Drum Dance are now being replaced by amateur theater group like Silamiut, who use elements of indigenous music with masks, face paints and other techniques. Piseq which is a form of personal song is based on the daily life on Greenlanders. They are handed down from generation to generation.

Among the Greenland Song, the Greenlandic Inuit folk songs are performed to play games, tell story and also to tease or charm others. Greenland Song is not merely a tool of entertainment but an integrated part of the life of the local people.
