Lisbon is the Capital of Portugal. The city has developed as the business centre of the country. Lisbon is not only famous for being the capital of Portugal, but it is considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The city is full of art and architectural sites bearing the magnificent history of the country. The main port of Portugal is also situated in Lisbon, which makes the city commercially convenient. Lisbon is known as Lisboa in Portuguese.
Location of Lisbon
Lisbon is located at 38° 44' North and 9° 08' West, 17km from the Atlantic Ocean on its coast. Tagus River flows past the city and into the ocean. The city is situated at the heat of Portugal. The capital city of Portugal covers 84 sq km area. On the west end of the city lies the Monsanto Forest Park, the largest European city park.
History of Lisbon
The first settlement near the city harbor was developed by the Phoenicians at the opening of the Tagus River and was named as Alis Ubbo. Later the Romans conquered the region and transferred it into Lusitanian administrative capital. From A.D. 407 till long after the town was ruled by the Alani, Visigoth Moors. The Moors ruled the town until 1147. The entire town was destroyed by the earthquake that occurred in 1755. After several invasions, destructions and falls Lisbon finally gained its current position since the 20th century.
Lisbon is the political, business, cultural and tourism centre of Portugal and is one of the most visited cities across the country.
