An analysis of Micronesia health over the years exhibits two distinctive stages. The people who have settled in Micronesia for a long period of time and have been its natives are mostly seen to suffer from the traditional diseases like respiratory problems and infectious diseases. The second generation of Micronesians, especially the post war generation mainly suffered from cardiac problems and diabetes. At present Micronesia is still threatened by the age old health problems along with new diseases that are cropping up. A major problem on the Micronesian islands is that of infant malnutrition. The state of health in Micronesia has improved considerably over the years. This has largely been the result of the successful immunization of children against such life threatening diseases as hepatitis B, polio, mumps and measles.
The introduction of modern medicine and methods of treatment has controlled and resisted the development of infectious diseases and improved the state of health in Micronesia. Each of the islands in the Federated States of Micronesia has its own hospitals and several health care clinics scattered throughout the land. Though sometimes there is a dearth in the supplies of medicines, the doctors and staff try to administer the best possible treatment. Tourists on the island, however, are advised to take necessary steps which may involve vaccination to limit the chances of being vulnerable to any disease.
