Football in Malta is a popular sport of the country. Malta Football breathed its first breath in the late 19th century. The country was a British colony at that time and was considered as a Crown Colony. Sir Arthur Borton was the governor of this place. But it was not started as a game that every other people used to play. It was initially played among the members of the British services only. We come to know from the old reports that they used to play the game without any boots and there was no proper football ground at that time.
It might be a shocking information but Malta Football Association is the oldest in Europe. It was founded in 1900. The first league began in 1909-1910 and as the years progress, new championships and tournaments were added to that list. The game expanded a lot in the 1920s. During that time foreign teams started to visit and the spectators were amazed to see the local heroes playing against the foreigners. This proved to be a smart move by the Malta Football Association as it made the game even more popular.
After the Second World War, the teams suffered a serious set back as many of the players joined the British forces during the war. Now-a-days, there are ten teams playing in the Premiere League. Except these ten teams, there are many other clubs playing in the first, second and third division leagues. Each of them has a fair chance to go up the order and play in the Premiership. The youth teams in Malta have a group of boys with a lot of potential. The youth league is divided into four sections from Section A to section D. Knock out tournaments are also played in this version of the game. The Malta football team is performing well and if they continue to do so then their dream of playing World Cup is not far behind.
