Capital of Lebanon is the city of Beirut. An important seaport, Beirut forms the gateway to the country of Lebanon in the Middle East. Beirut, is important as the commercial as well as the cultural center of the country. It is the largest city of Lebanon.
The various phases of the history of the country influenced the capital of Lebanon as well. Different dynasties of rulers and conquerors of Lebanon established Beirut as a chief center of administration. The Phoenician settlement in Beirut was followed by a glorious era during the Roman rule. Later the Arabs conquered Beirut in AD 635.
The Christian Crusaders captured the city, and later on the Mamluk dynasty took over. The Ottoman Empire conquered Beirut in 1517. The French Mandate put Beirut in the position of being the capital of Lebanon. After the declaration of independence in 1943, Beirut became the official capital of the Lebanese Republic.
The independence of the country resulted in the progress of the nation and the capital of Lebanon flourished and prospered. The peace and prosperity was however short lived as the Lebanese Civil War started in1975. The conditions have improved in recent times and Beirut has once again become the prominent city of Lebanon.
Tourism industry developed with the return of peace in the capital of Lebanon, Beirut. The numerous historical sites of Beirut attracted the attention of tourists. The availability of accommodation, means of transport and access to other parts of Lebanon makes Beirut an important tourist destination of the country.
