Taiwan People are assorted in nature, belonging to varied religions, racial groups and nationalities. The first Taiwanese occupants were ancestors of today’s native population, who make up a percent or two of the entire national population. Though their origin remains a mystery, a handful of anthropologists believe that they belonged to the Malayo-Polynesian clans, coming directly from the Cordillera Mountains in north Luzon. They affected the national culture to considerable extents through their physical presence.
A greater part of Taiwan People comprises the foreign rulers who entered the land for occupying it politically, and later settled permanently on the land. Here, mention must be made of European and Chinese invaders who resided on the Taiwanese land for extensive time span and exerted beneficial impact on the overall nation.
A handful of native foreign immigrants also form integral parts of Taiwan People. They include Han, Hoklo, Hakka, Mandarin and many others, who enriched the country’s cultural backgrounds immensely through their distinct and unique achievements. In this respect, mention must also be made about the Taiwanese indigenous people like Ami, Rukai, Atayal, Yami, Paiwan, Bunun and Puyuma, who are the prominent ethnic tribes still existing in the country.
In recent times, the indigenous Taiwan People take shelter on highland regions, more precisely, on mountain tops. The reason may be that they like secluded and natural environments for surviving, with which they are more used to from time immemorial.
In fact, the Taiwanese society had been a silent observer; witnessing millions of foreigners entering the country through different mountain passes in China to become integral parts of the Taiwan People. The good side of such immigrations is that the country came in direct contact with people belonging to different races, religions and thoughts, which get immensely reflected in the assorted culture of the land.
