Danube


The river Danube is renowned throughout the world for its ancient associations. In the entire Europe Danube is actually the second longest river and the only chief river of the continent to flow from the west to the east. The river is fortunate to be gifted with numerous names in many European languages. The ancient name of Danube is Danubius, the Germans call it Donau and in Ukraine it is called Dunay. Dunav, Duna and Dunaj are just some of the other interesting names for Danube. The origin of Danube is in Germany's Black Forest region and after traversing a meandering path of some 2850 kilometers it empties its waters into the Black Sea.

Danube Importance

Danube has a major role to play in influencing Serbia tourism as it attracts loads of visitors to its banks from all parts of the world. The river is fed by almost by all the streams, fountains and smaller rivers in Serbia. The complete navigability of Danube makes it conducive for creating easy connections with countries like Hungary, Germany, Bulgaria, Romania and Austria. Danube is also an excellent source of hydro-electric power in Europe. The exciting river activities along its banks draw in many tourists to Serbia.

Danube Day

In Serbia Danube Day is celebrated on a very large scale and it is treated almost like a hearty festival. This encourages the active participation of children and students in eco-camps and other educational projects too.

The mighty waters of Danube are so ancient and deep that the river lends a special force to all the lands through which it flows.
