Romania Monasteries

Romania has a number of Orthodox monasteries of great historical value. The Romania monasteries dates back from the medieval ages and are included in the prestigious UNESCO world heritage list.

The Romania monasteries are characterized by superb artistic designs both inside and outside the structures. The interiors of the monasteries in Romania contain stunning frescoes that are a treat to the human eye. Notable monasteries at Romania include the painted churches located in Bucovina. These places of learning and worship were built during the 15th century. The Voronet Monastery Church in Bucovina is known all over the world as the 'Sistine Chapel of the East'. This epithet is due to the abundance of frescoes inside the church. The frescoes are painted in a unique blue color. This special blue is termed 'Voronet blue'.

The list of notable monasteries of Romania also includes the wooden churches of Maramures. The architecture of these church structures is an exclusive mix of traditional timber design with Gothic architectural style. The churches are made of thick logs and have painted biblical designs within the interiors of the church. They were constructed during the 18th and 19th centuries. These churches were incorporated into the world heritage list compiled by UNESCO in 1999.
