Romania is a country situated in the southeastern part of Europe. To the south of Romania lies Bulgaria. To its northeast there is Ukraine and Moldova and Hungary and Serbia lies to its west. The country of Romania has a beautiful stretch of coastline along the Black Sea. The southern and the eastern Carpathian Mountains occupy the central position of Romania. The official language of Romania is Romanian. It occupies an area of 238,392 square kilometers. Romania has been considered as an independent country on 13th of July 1878. According to the July 2007 population estimate, Romania has a population of 22,276,056.
The present state of Romania emerged by the merging of Danubian Principalities of Wallachia and Moldavia in 1859. Romania got united with Transylvania in 1918. The capital of Romania is Bucharest. Bucharest is regarded as the largest city of Romania and is also the sixth largest city in the European Union. The country of Romania became a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization on 29th March 2004. Romania joined the European Union on 1st January 2007. The country of Romania ranks seventh in terms of population in the European Union and ninth largest in terms of territorial area in the European Union.
